The University values the safety, well being, and productivity of all
employees within Custodial Services. This is evident in our facility,
equipment, work process, and policies.
Both Main Campus and Health Sciences Custodial Services use the team
cleaning approach to keeping all indoor facilities clean. The team method
consists of a four-person crew each cross-trained to perform all functions
of the team. Each team consists of a utility specialist, vacuum specialist,
restroom specialist, and light duty specialist. The team cleaning approach
has reduced the amount of on-the-job injuries and work time lost by 81%,
and has reduced chemical costs by 74.9%. All members of the Custodial
staff have been trained in-house on the team cleaning approach. The program
also has special training requirements for lead staff. The Custodial Section
has implemented job cards and scouting reports for the teams to better
track the quality of service provided. The team cleaning approach has
been so successful that Mary Vosevich, PPD Director, presented the philosophy
to the Association of Higher Education Facility Officers (APPA) in Montreal,
Canada in 2001. Among others, a significant benefit of team cleaning has
been that the Physical Plant Department has experienced substantial savings,
over previous methods used in custodial operations. We also expect savings
in energy costs due to the team-cleaning concept.
